About Shannon Airport (SNN)
The airport was established in 1942 and by 1945 the airport runways were extended to allow transatlantic flights to land.
After the World War II ended the airport was ready to be used by new commercial airlines of North America and Europe. The following years Shannon Airport became well known as a gateway between Europe and America and thus the international carriers flow grew rapidly. Many limited aircraft range needed refueling stops at Shannon before and after trips across the Atlantic; this changed in the 1960s when long range aircraft were introduced. In 1947 Shannon was established by the “Customs Free Airport Act” as the first duty free airport. In 1969 Aer Rianta, nowadays Dublin Airport Authority, a new government agency, was given airport responsibility. In 1971, given the increasing passenger number, a new enlarged terminal was opened; the terminal was extended in 2000.
The airport went through a renovation process and in 2010 a passenger separation project and an airside area renovation was completed. In 2010 SNN became the first airport outside U.S. that offered U.S. Customs and Border Protection to private aircraft.
